About Sopot: me Sopot is Old Slavic and means a spring, or falling water. The town grew up in the middle of the village of Ropočevo and first appears on Langer's map from the early nineteenth century, where Ropočevo and Sopot are drawn as separate villages. It has been one of Belgrade's municipalities since 1956. One of the finest places in Sopot is the nearby village of Nemenikuće, which took its name during Ottoman rule: passing by and seeing the village burnt, Prince Miloš is said to have remarked that there was not a house left — nema ni kuće — and the name stuck.

Sopot is the southernmost of Belgrade's municipalities, about 40 km from the centre at the foot of Kosmaj, and largely rural. Scattered villages and the hills of Kosmaj mean the approach to each address is planned carefully beforehand.
