ToR1 — the form that must be filed before your things travel
- Transfer of Residence relief. HMRC's ToR1 scheme relieves import duty and VAT on personal belongings when you move, on conditions much like the EU rule.
- Twelve months abroad, six months of ownership. You must have lived outside the UK for at least twelve consecutive months, and have owned and used the goods for at least six.
- File before the shipment arrives. HMRC approval can take anywhere from 24 hours to five weeks. If the goods arrive without an approved — or at least submitted — ToR1, customs may charge full duty and VAT, and that is hard to undo afterwards.
- The application is in your name. The relief attaches to the person moving, so you file it; we guide you through it and time the transport around the approval.

Paperwork and customs
The United Kingdom is outside the EU, and since Brexit a full customs procedure applies to household goods. Alongside the ToR1 application you will need an inventory of your belongings, proof of your address abroad and in the UK, and your passport.
Relief from duty is not automatic and it is not the same as the absence of a procedure. Tell us as early as you can — this is the one destination where the paperwork, not the driving, sets the timetable.
