Tape is what keeps a packed box shut. Without a decent one the box opens on the stairs and the contents go with it — which is why this is the material people under-buy most often and regret first.
The types, and what each is for
- Clear BOPP — the standard for sealing boxes. Strong adhesive, works on any cardboard.
- Brown BOPP — the same tape, a little stronger, and the seam is easier to see.
- Cloth tape (duct tape) — very strong and waterproof, for securing furniture and protecting edges.
- Kraft paper tape — the greener option; it recycles with the box and you can write on it.
- Double-sided — for fixing protective material in place without anything showing.

Which tape to buy
For nine boxes out of ten, ordinary BOPP is all you need. The rest are for particular jobs.
- Clear or brown BOPP — standard sealing. Brown shows up better, so it is easier to check the seam is whole.
- The 66 m roll — when you are moving a whole flat and do not want to change rolls every fifth box.
- FRAGILE tape — so the delicate boxes are recognised at loading and do not end up at the bottom of the stack.
- Cloth tape — not for boxes; for holding furniture parts together and protecting edges.
A typical two-bedroom flat takes five to eight rolls. Buy more than you think: a half-taped box is how things break.
Taping a box so it holds
- Tape the bottom in an H — along the seam and across both ends. One strip down the middle is how boxes open in mid-air.
- Two or three passes on the bottom of a heavy box.
- Do not stick tape directly onto polished furniture; put a blanket or paper under it first.
- Use a dispenser — it is faster, straighter and uses less tape.
Frequently asked questions
Which tape is strongest for heavy boxes?
Cloth (duct) tape — it is far stronger and holds a heavy base. For ordinary boxes, BOPP is enough.
How many rolls does a flat need?
A typical two-bedroom takes five to eight rolls of the standard 48 mm × 66 m. Buy more rather than fewer.
Will tape mark my furniture?
Ordinary packing tape should not leave a permanent mark, provided it is not stuck straight onto a delicate surface. Put paper or a blanket underneath.
Clear or brown?
Both seal a box equally well. Brown is a little stronger and the seam is easier to see on cardboard.
Do you sell dispensers?
Yes, RSD 900, and a moving set with three rolls and a dispenser for RSD 1,400.
