The road and the border
Either through Croatia and Slovenia, crossing at Fernetti near Trieste, or through Hungary and Austria over Tarvisio. We choose by the season and the traffic; the Slovenian route is shorter, the Austrian one more reliable in summer when the coast is busy.

Practical notes
Milan’s Area C congestion zone limits when and which vehicles may enter the centre, and older buildings around the Navigli and the Duomo have courtyards a large van cannot use. We check the address and the access hours before the date is fixed, and use a smaller vehicle for the last stretch where necessary.
